Jes\u00fas \u00e9tait un maillon de plus dans la tradition du travail du bois qui se perp\u00e9tuait depuis plus de cinq cent ans dans ce coin de la province du Guip\u00fazcoa. Pendant que dans la plupart des villages c\u00f4tiers basques du XVIe si\u00e8cle on partait p\u00eacher en mer, \u00e0 Zarautz on se sp\u00e9cialisa dans la construction de petits bateaux de p\u00eache et tra\u00eeni\u00e8res, des chaloupes rapides, essentielles pour la chasse \u00e0 la baleine. La ville acquit une r\u00e9putation mondiale pour ce travail d\u2019artisans.<br \/>\nLes profondes transformations \u00e9conomiques survenues en Europe au milieu du XIXe si\u00e8cle entra\u00een\u00e8rent le d\u00e9clin des chantiers navals de bateaux en bois traditionnels.<\/p>\n<p>La crise pointait \u00e0 l\u2019horizon. Une porte rest\u00e9e ouverte pendant des si\u00e8cles commen\u00e7ait \u00e0 se fermer, mais plusieurs fen\u00eatres s\u2019ouvraient simultan\u00e9ment. L\u2019une d\u2019elles concerna le tourisme\u00a0: parall\u00e8lement \u00e0 la r\u00e9volution industrielle, le tourisme de mer et de plage se popularisa dans une partie du golfe de Gascogne. Zarautz, avec une \u00e9tendue de sable de plus de deux kilom\u00e8tres, fut un des lieux choisis par la famille royale et la bourgeoisie de l\u2019\u00e9poque pour accueillir les fameux bains de vague. Ces chantiers navals, o\u00f9 l\u2019on construisit des bateaux durant des si\u00e8cles, se lanc\u00e8rent dans la fabrication de meubles de luxe. Pr\u00e8s de 70 ans apr\u00e8s sa fondation, Muebles Treku reste l\u2019entreprise des descendants directs de Jes\u00fas Aldabaldetreku.
